With success comes failure. There are many inspirational stories where people have time and again proved this. But there are some people who have also proved it the other way round – that with failure comes success!
It is true that every coin has two sides, that if there is failure there will also be success but if it’s a flipping coin which is midway in the air, you never know! So sometimes it takes strings of failures before one tastes success. The stalwarts I am going to write about and the failures they faced would have been enough to deter any normal human being. But not anymore as you read through it.
When there are numerous such great people who worked beyond all the hardships and faced life as it was, I have chosen to mention only a few of them.
1. Steve Jobs
Before we get started, here is a part of inspiring commencement by Steve jobs at stanford in 2005. This small clip teaches a great lesson. Make sure to watch it before you proceed further.
Now this name is synonymous with élan. Jobs preached that no matter what happens in your life, struggles in school or an unsuccessful career path—every aspect will somehow help you down the road. “Again, you can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards,” Jobs said. “So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something—your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.” Jobs gave an inspiring commencement address at Stanford in 2005. Though he is not with us anymore, he made sure that he leaves behind a giant company we all know it today as the Apple.
2. Walt Disney
The man who took us to a joyride in our childhood, who made us believe in the win of good over evil, the man who created a parallel superficial worldwas fired by a newspaper editor for lack of ideas! Disney also went bankrupt several times before he built Disneyland.
When Walt Disney first started to work on Snow White, the project was termed as “Disney’s Folly”, and halfway across production he ran out of money to continue the work.
Most people in this situation would just quit and get whatever they can out of what’s left, but for Disney he persevered. He decided to travel around and show clips of the raw film to producers in hopes of them funding his project; in the end this attempt was what saved his studio and allowed him to finish the classic Snow White film. When Snow White was finally featured it received nothing short of a standing ovation.
What else other than his dedication and unparalleled determination that further sustained our belief in existence beyond every failure!
3. J. K. Rowling
“Never be ashamed! There’s some who’ll hold it against you, but they’re not worth bothering with.”
– J.K.Rowling.
The magical world of Harry Potter created quite a stir on its inception. It was another dream world, the first of its kind after Disneyland, created by J.K. Rowling. We’ve seen her walking down the red carpet with voguish clothes, signing autographs and waving to her fans with a resplendent smile. But her life story best defines the saying ‘rags to riches’, now that she is worth a whopping $1 billion!
Since childhood she had dreamed of being a creative success in literature or any other art form, but her life was neither creative nor successful. All she had was a failed marriage and was living on benefits and social security paychecks. She lived in a mice- infested flat in Edinburgh and fought poverty and depression every day to raise her daughter Jessica.
With nothing more to lose, she decided to not give up on her dreams and the result of that indistinguishable fervor was a gigantic imagination called Hogwarts. Her work was initially rejected by 9 publishers before Bloomsbury Children’s Books paid her $14,300 for the rights to ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’. Now the Harry Potter brand has an estimated worth exceeding 15$ billion. Stupefy!
4. Colonel Sanders
When his chickens are undoubtedly finger licking good, his road to success was certainly not.
He is the symbol of “Never give up” and “age is no barrier” spirit. At the age of 40, Sanders was famous with his fried chicken restaurant located in Kentucky. But at the age of 60, construction of a new road put him out of business. He went to over 1,000 places trying to sell his chicken recipe before he found a buyer interested in his 11 herbs and spices. How many of us will keep knocking on doors when we have received 1000 rejections? I presume not many! This is why there are not many successes like Colonel Sanders.
What we see today is one of the biggest fast food chains of the world, Kentucky Fried Chicken, popularly known as KFC.
5. Eminem
A child whose father walked out of him when he was only 18 months; raised by a drug addicted mother who went on to file a lawsuit against him; got addicted to pills, fell into depression and nearly died; struggled with drugs and alcohol; shunned by the racist society for being a white rapper;he had every bit of a reason to quit. But he realized that our current circumstances do not pave the way for our future circumstances. We should learn from him how to use our tough days as motivation only to use them to take us to greater heights.
6. Oprah Winfrey
Born to an unmarried teenage mother, her parents separated soon after her birth. She went on to live with her cruel grandmother who would hit her with a stick when she did not do chores. Her grandmother was so poor that Oprah often wore dresses made of potato sacks, for which the local children made fun of her.
She had also suffered sexual abuse at the hands of her cousin, uncle and family friend. At the age of 13, after years of abuse, she ran away from home and got pregnant at the age of 14 but her son died shortly after birth. Determined to make her life work, at 17 she entered a local beauty pageant and won.
Sexually abused at 9; Ran away from home at 13; pregnant at 14; Beauty queen at 17; abused drugs in her 20s; first black American woman on National T.V in America and Millionaire at 32. Sounds strange but true.
We hope you like this inspiring stories of real life people.
